BR Hills

Location:

The Biligiriranga Hills is situated in Chamarajanagar at the borders of Tamil Nadu, South India. The area is called Biligiriranga Swamy (Lord Vishnu) Temple Wildlife Sanctuary or simply BRT Wildlife Sanctuary and form a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination.

 

Origin of the name :

The sanctuary derives it’s name “Biligiri” from the White Rock face of a major hill with a 500 year old temple atop, where devotees from distant places come to pay homage to the lord.

 

Festivals :

  • An annual car festival of Lord Vishnu, held in the month of April, draws pilgrims from far and wide.
  • Once in two years, the Soliga Tribals present a 1 foot and 9 inches slipper, made of skin, to the deity.
  • The Soliga tribe reveres the 600 year old “Dodda Sampige Mara” or the big Champak Tree, which is more than 43 meter tall. They consider the tree as a representation of Lord Shiva and perform fire dance around it during the Mahashivarathri festival.

 

Wildlife :

Situated in confluence of the Eastern and Western Ghats, the hills facilitate seasonal migration of large mammals and numerous smaller life forms. The forests have deciduous, evergreen and grassland vegetation is a safe habitat for

  • 26 species of mammals including elephants, gaurs, spotted deer, rare four-horned antelopes, wild boars and chitals.
  • about 270 species of birds including paradise flycatcher, scarlet minivets, velvet-fronted nuthatch, golden – fronted chloropsis and lorikeets.

The BRT Sanctuary is a protected reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. With17 tigers in the region, it was declared as a Tiger Reserve in the year 2010.

K Gudi Wildlife Santuary

Location :

Among streams, valleys, hills and breathtaking scenic beauty, K Gudi (Kyathadevara Gudi Wilderness Camp) is a popular tourist destination, located in Yelandur, a town on the B.R. Hills range.

Wildlife :

Spot a myriad species of birds, and animals including sloth bears and leopards, and if you are lucky, one can also see tigers! The camp offers open top jeep safaris into the sanctuary and experienced staff to guide tourists into the nuances of wildlife.

Trekking :

For the trekkers, there are naturalists who lead daily treks on predetermined trails. Enjoy the scenic beauty surrounded by mountains, trekking all the way to the top of nearby hills. There are special treks to please the birdwatchers too.

Camp at night :

After a long exciting day, the guests at the camp can watch wildlife movies. Then, nothing can beat the warm feeling of being in nature’s lap around a campfire, and be awed while the camp staff share their experiences.

Bara Chukki and Gaganachukki Falls 

139km from Bengaluru, the Gaganachukki and Bharachukki Falls are twin waterfalls, borne out of Cauvery river that split into two streams in Malavalli, Mandya and Kollegal, Chamrajnagar respectively.

MM Hills 

Male Mahadeshwara Hill, located about 3000 feet above sea level in Kollegal hosts the sacred temple of Sri Male Mahadeshwara and is a popular Shaiva pilgrim centre drawing lakhs of pilgrims and nature lovers.

Talkadu 

An ancient town buried under sand for centuries, this place is surrounded by a legend. Visit this place to be transported back in time.

Somanathapura 

Famous for the Chennakesava Temple built by Soma, under King Narasimha III of Hoysala Dynasty in 1268 CE, it is a protected heritage site, and one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. The visiting hours are from 9:00am to 5:30pm.

Kanakagiri Hill 

Also known as the Nakayama Shaila, or “hill in the form of heaven”, it is located near Maleyur in Chamarajanagar. Here, you will witness dense forests of sandalwood, Srikhetra Kanakagiri (a holy Jain centre), Nishadi Caves, the Samadhi Mantapas, as well as inscriptions and footprints from the ancient times.
